In 1928, the site was a pure production plant, but the success of the first BERNINA house-hold sewing machine in 1932 brought about the first building extensions. |

In the 1960s, when BERNINA starting producing industrial machines and around 1,000 sewing machines a day left the factory, the com-pany expanded southwards – beyond the railway tracks which ran through the BERNINA site. |

Radical extensions were carried out right into the 1970s and are still ongoing. Thus, the flooding of the Feldbach above the company site in June 2000 forced BERNINA to halt production for five weeks. The bottom floors were flooded with 30,000 m3 water, which damaged the substations, water and compressor plants as well as large parts of the warehouse.Today BERNINA is not only able to profit from a modernised infrastructure, including a high-tech measuring room for quality assurance, but also from the Creative Centre, opened in autumn /winter 2006, in which workshops, presentations and talks are held for anyone interested in the topic of sewing. |
